How Micro tracers Work
Micro tracers are added to animal feed and can be easily detected using specialized equipment. They enable the rapid identification and correction of mixing errors, ensuring consistent quality.
Benefits of Micro tracers
Micro tracers provide a highly precise method for monitoring feed mixing quality. They can be detected at a ratio of 1:100,000 (10 grams per 1,000 kg of product), which is significantly more accurate than traditional methods such as the manganese-protein method. A key advantage is that test batches do not need to be discarded, allowing them to be distributed as regular production batches.
Additionally, micro tracers can be added in different colors at specific points during the mixing process, which helps validate mixing times. The analysis is immediate and reliable, as the micro tracers consist of fine iron particles coated with a non-toxic food-grade dye. During analysis, these dyes are activated, allowing the micro tracers to be easily counted.
Applications in the Feed Industry
Micro tracers are widely used in the animal feed industry, including livestock feed, pet food, and aquaculture. They help producers meet strict quality standards and regulatory requirements by verifying the homogeneity of feed mixtures and detecting carryover between production batches.
To measure homogeneity, samples are taken directly after the mixer and from the final product (e.g., meal or pellets). For carryover experiments, samples are analyzed from a subsequent batch without micro tracers to check for residual presence. This contributes to a safe and consistent production process, especially for medicated feeds. Due to their simple detection method and non-destructive nature, micro tracers are an efficient and reliable choice for quality control in the feed sector.
