What is Fipronil?
Fipronil is used as a medicine against mites and ticks. Because it is harmful in large quantity it’s not allowed to be used stalls and stables which contain animals that are processed for the food chain. But In 2017 fipronil was found in eggs that originated from stalls that were cleaned with this forbidden substances.
Only eggs?
This substance was found in approximately 15% of all laying hen companies in the Netherlands. Fipronil has not yet been demonstrated in broiler chickens. And these are more than 99% responsible for supplying chicken meat to consumers.
Health
The NVWA states that even when ingesting quantities that are many times larger than a normal portion of egg products in which fipronil is found, there is no risk to public health. It is not a carcinogenic substance, it is not harmful to reproductive organs, and children and pregnant women do not experience any extra risk.

- > 0.06 MG / KG - Possible negative effect in children with long-term consumption.
- > 0.005 MG / KG - No risks to public health.
