Algae
Algae are grown in open basins and closed reactors. These can be filled with fresh or saltwater. The art of growing algae lies in creating the right conditions so that the algae produce the substances needed for a nutritious end product. The end product often takes the form of a powder or tablet. These powders can be processed in, for example, a burger or added during the production of animal feed or pet food.
Seaweed
Seaweed is also a type of algae that is divided into the macro-algae category. Seaweed is only found in salt water. Currently, 500 edible species are known that are either harvested or grown naturally. The difference between the algae is that they require relatively little processing before it is suitable for human consumption.
